Job Description

Out client is seeking skilled Bus and Light Rail Mechanics to maintain and repair its fleet of buses and light rail vehicles, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation for the Twin Cities region. Mechanics play a critical role in preventive maintenance, diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues, and repairing or replacing components on buses, light rail trains, and related equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on buses and light rail vehicles, including oil changes, brake inspections, tire rotations, and fluid checks.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems using diagnostic tools and technical manuals.
  • Troubleshoot and fix issues with engines, transmissions, HVAC systems, doors, brakes, and onboard electronics.
  • Conduct inspections to ensure vehicles meet safety and operational standards
  • Rebuild and remanufacture components such as alternators, starters, and gearboxes to manufacturer specifications.
  • Fabricate or modify parts as needed using welding, machining, or other shop techniques.
  • Respond to service calls for vehicles experiencing breakdowns or malfunctions in the field.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts used, and maintenance schedules using computerized systems.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to prioritize tasks and ensure timely vehicle availability.
  • Adhere to safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and shop tools.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED; completion of a technical or vocational program in automotive, diesel, or heavy equipment repair preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required; ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement within a specified timeframe (training provided).
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment (e.g., multimeters, scan tools).
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, hydraulics, and pneumatics strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in various weather conditions.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as transit operates 24/7.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Starting pay: Approximately $38-$42 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Full-time position with premium pay for overnight shifts
