Behavioral Health Tech (BHT) Job Description

The Behavioral Health Technicians (BHTs) is responsible for providing direct patient care, therapeutic interventions, and crisis de-escalation in behavioral health settings, including psychiatric hospitals, group homes, and residential treatment centers. The BHT will work closely with nurses, social workers, and clinical teams to support individuals with mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and co-occurring disorders.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients with daily activities, hygiene, and self-care while maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment.

  • Observe, document, and report patient behaviors, progress, and changes to clinical staff.

  • Utilize evidence-based crisis prevention techniques to de-escalate behavioral disturbances.

  • Maintain calm and professional communication to ensure patient and staff safety.

  • Lead and participate in group therapy sessions, recreational activities, and psychoeducational programs.

  • Provide emotional support and encouragement to individuals experiencing psychiatric distress.

  • Maintain accurate progress notes, incident reports, and patient records in compliance with Arizona state regulations and Joint Commission standards.

  • Follow all HIPAA guidelines to protect patient confidentiality.

  • Work collaboratively with psychiatrists, nurses, and therapists to develop and implement individualized care plans.

  • Assist in admissions, discharges, and patient transitions within the facility.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a behavioral health, psychiatric, or healthcare setting (preferred).

  • BHT Certification (if required by Arizona law) or relevant education in psychology, social work, or mental health-related field.

  • CPR & First Aid Certification

  • Crisis Prevention & Intervention (CPI) or de-escalation training.

  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Strong communication, empathy, and ability to remain calm in high-stress situations.
